Selous GR - Tanzania

The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is one of the largest fauna reserves of the WORLD (!),
located in the south of the country.
It was named after englishman Frederick Courtney Selous, who died in 1917 while fighting against the germans
during the first world war.
It was designated as UNESCO world heritage site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature.

It has a total area of 54,600 km². All the animals of the savanna, the forests, the rivers, and more than 400 bird species can be found in this park in a larger number than in any other African park.

The area became a game reserve in 1905. Nowadays it has a touristic importance and most of it is rarely visited, which gives you the guarantee of an unspoiled nature !

Interesting places in the park include the Rufiji river, which flows into the Indian Ocean in front of the Mafia island and the Stiegler, a canyon of 100 metres depth and 100 metres width.

In the Selous Reserve, safaris by f...

Zambia-South Luangwa NP

Experts have dubbed South Luangwa as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason. The concentration of game around the Luangwa river and it’s ox bow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa.

The Luangwa River is the most intact major river system in Africa and is the life blood of the park's 9050km2. The Park hosts a wide variety of wildlife birds and vegetation. The now famous ‘walking safari’ originated in this park and is still one of the finest ways to experience this pristine wilderness first hand. The changing seasons add to the Park’s richness ranging from dry, bare bushveld in the winter to a lush green wonderland in the summer months. There are 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species. The only notable exception is the rhino, sadly poached to extinction.

If you’re staying at one of the Valley’s lodges, the guides will ensure you have every opportunity to see all that the valley has to offer of its wildlife, ...

Zimbabwe - Mana Pools NP

Mana Pools on the southern bank of the Zambezi River is one of southern Africa's top walking safari destinations, in addition however, there isn't a river in the world that offers the big game, wilderness location and adventure that you'll find here on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia (Former South and North Rhodesia)

Mana Pools itself is best accessed via the lower Zambezi safari hub in Kariba - an easy air-hop from Victoria Falls or morning's drive from Lusaka in Zambia.

From Lake Kariba, the Zambezi River runs through the Kariba Gorge into the Zambezi Valley on its way to the Indian Ocean. Here the Zambezi, so different from the one that challenges the white water rafters at Victoria Falls, that is home to the second of Zimbabwe's World Heritage Sites, the Mana Pools (the place of four pools) National Park.

The river has left behind the remains of old channels forming small seasonal pools scattered over 2 000 sq. kms surrounded by the valley escarpment. The four main...

Zambia-Lower Zambezi NP

The Zambezi Valley has been known outside of Africa for thousands of years. Legends suggest that the kingdoms of Hiram, Solomon and Sheba were enriched by the gold and ivory of Ophir - supposedly part of present day Zimbabwe. The Zambezi was one of the gateways to the ancient treasure trove. More recent history records some of the explorations of hunters, missionaries and slave traders along this part of the Zambezi River.

Nowadays this part of the valley holds very different treasures for adventurers!
Temperature scan be surprising : when I went there in november, it was more than 40 C° during day. By night it falls (!) down to 34 C°... Really heavy !

Beyond Kariba Gorge, the Zambezi River flows through a wide and game-rich floodplain hemmed in by towering escarpments in both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The shoreline in Zimbabwe has protected safari areas and Mana Pools National Park, a World Heritage Site renowned for its population of elephant, buffalo, lions, leopard...

Zambia - Livingstone

PLEASE, BE PATIENT enough to read the text below, before looking at the pictures !
It will only take 1,5 minute of your life !

Before arriving to the Victoria falls, I stopped in Choma, a village +/- 200 km. before Livingstone, where there is a museum which is well a worth to visit.
In a former school dating from the 20's, in the oldest preserved colonial building in Zambia,
the exhibits concentrate on the Tonga people who are one of the main tribe from Zambia.
Outside of the building, in a nice park, you can see 3 huge metal balls which have +/- 3 meters diameter (See my pictures).
When the Kariba dam on the Zambezi river (which gives born to the great Kariba lake) was being built, those balls were strung on battle-ship chains between bulldozers, and then pulled through the bush to clear the vegetation.
There's also an an old steam-machine which has been used for this work.

In Livingstone town, I've been stayed in Ngolide lodge which is a very comfortable and pleasant...

Zambia - Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park, situated in central-western Zambia, is the size of Wales in Britain and twice the size of Yellowstone National Park in the USA. It is the largest park in Zambia.

The park spills into three of Zambia’s provinces and has an impressive range of over 400 species of birds and abundant wildlife, the only visible absentee being the giraffe.

Kafue River and its tributaries help the great diversity of this landscape of rolling grass plains and forests. Much of the park is wooded but opens up at intervals to wide grassy clearings known as ‘dambos’, where antelopes are attracted to the good grazing. These are punctuated with termite mounds, spouting fig trees and phoenix palms. Predators such as leopard and lion are found here.

A dominant feature of the park is the Busanga Plains - a vast floodplain fed by the Lufupa River system. This floodplain has been known to recede in the dry season, often trapping hippo in shallow pools.

At Kafwala the river splits i...

Zambia-Bangweulu wetland-Shoebill camp

Second part of my trip in Zambia (former North-Rhodesia)....
Bangweulu lake and wetlands, at the Shoebill camp !
(Bangweulu means "Where the water join the sky").

I spend 3 days there, looking for the mythic Shoebill storck (They said "Shobo", there), and never see it, even if I spend hours and hours to walk through the marsh in the mud of the swamps, following my guides ! Only an abandoned nest, and a dead baby (No picture, it was too sad).
But it was a great experience, and I'll have to go again !

I included some pictures of this mythic bird, but they aren't mine, I never saw it...

I realize the explanation is a bit long, but I want to "plant the decor" properly...
Let's go !

The Great Bangweulu Basin, incorporating the vast Bangweulu Lake and a massive wetland area lies in a shallow depression in the centre of an ancient cratonic platform, the North Zambian Plateau. The basin is fed by 17 principle rivers from a catchment area of 190 000 kms2 , but is drained by ...

Tanga - Tanzania's garden !

The Tanga region (North of Dar-es-Salaam) is the real Tanzania's garden !
Where the temperature is more 'continental', they can grow all the vegetables and fruits you can imagine !
Apples, oranges, peers, passion fruits, limes, strawberries, mangoes, ananas, and much more !

Otherwise, speaking in terms of tourism, Tanga has not much to offer.
But the caves !!
Tanga's caves are something unique in Africa !
They are 7 caves, very deep and large.

The most interesting one is the last one.
The one you can reach only on special request and booking, 'cause you'll need a guide to go there.

Don't put your best clothes, 'cause you'll have to walk for an hour or more, through the bush,
along a nice river, to reach this place.
And then, you'll have to make ramping on some places, to visit the site.
But it's worth to go there.

Then, from Tanga, going south to Dar-es-Salaam, make a stopover in Pangani.
That's paradise, white beaches, historic buildings, sea and sun !

Ruaha National Park - Tanzania

Ruaha national park is a large park, located in the south of Tanzania, near by Iringa.
By air, it's reachable from any tanzanian airport.
By car, from Dar-es-Salaam you'll arrive after a day by a good tarmac road plus another half-day by a 200km. rough road.
But remember that you'll need a 4x4 to avoid some bad experiences !

This lovely place rich in all species of animals is crossed by rivers and have plains, mountains and shady forests !

Tarangire & Selous

Tarangire National Park is a small park in the north of Tanzania, but with many animals. This place is easy to reach from Arusha by a good tarmac road, in less than 2 hours.

Selous game reserve, which is not yet a national park, but well protected, is the largest game reserve in Tanzania and probably in Africa !
This very large and wild area is located in the south of Tanzania, along the Rufiji river, and can be reached from Dar-es-Salaam in about 5 to 7 hours driving, during the dry season.
In the rain season, even if it's still possible, it's more hazardous. But if you got the budget, you can fly !

My friend Ernest runs a bushcamp there, and will be happy to receive you.

The "Momela lodge" is still full of pictures from the movie, and there's a "John Wayne" room, the "Hardy Kruger" bar, and so on... Very funny !

"The" Serengeti !

The Serengeti, one of the most well known National Park in Tanzania (and in Africa, even in the world),
is 15.000 sq.km, without any fence, (like in some countries) full of animals, living in natural condition.

If there is a place on earth where it's still the morning of life, it's here !
Serengeti, a word coming from the Masaï language (Siringe) meaning "large plains".
If you ever got the occasion to come in Africa, don't miss it !
